Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these medications must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
