Colombian Leader Warns 'I Would Take Up Arms Once More' if US Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and Colombia's president have turned up the tone of their exchange, increasing tensions bilaterally following US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has drug factories and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Rising Threats coupled with Claims

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump suggested comparable armed intervention towards the South American nation, claiming Colombia faces serious problems and “run by an unwell individual who likes making the drug and selling it to America."

While Colombia is the leading cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the trade.

A Deteriorating Partnership

Colombia for decades served as a close partner of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and enjoyed wide political approval in Washington, but relations have worsened significantly since Trump came to office.

Its narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Strong Response

When asked if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump said: "It sounds good from my perspective."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"He comments without information. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a message.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, which many of the country loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Leader

Petro spent part of his youth belonging of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate that he never took part in armed clashes. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in creating the nation's constitution in 1991 and eventually served as an influential politician. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the presidency.

"I pledged not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up arms again," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s protection team was strengthened.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have expressed support with Trump, but voices from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the possibility of a US attack on Colombia.

Political and Financial Strains

The US cancelled his travel authorization subsequent to he encouraged US military personnel to ignore unlawful commands. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions against the president, his spouse and a number of key allies.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its military presence in the region and bombing vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted strikes on boats in Pacific waters near Colombia.
