Blast Claims Three Carabinieri During Eviction Operation in Italy
A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house close to the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who fled following the explosion was found soon after. The trio have been transported to hospital.
The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area showed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.
Background and Motive
The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.
Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member triggered the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the interior minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the blast included 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
He was convinced the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
