A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
