Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Final Round Excitement
Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.
Play-Off Decider
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Other Performances
Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
